Evidence that Noah’s Ark is not a fairy tale (Please use this version) FeaturedWritten by Christopher Proudlove

UNITED KINGDOM (ANS – October 13, 2017) -- The Western world is seeing a rise in attacks in the media on Christianity by emboldened atheists. In England, too few clergy respond to Bible critics. Since my retirement 2006 as a journalist I’ve written countless blogs and letters to the press defending the Scriptures.
A recent battle has been over Noah’s Ark. A Doctor of Divinity dubbed me a “Bible literalist”. I wrote back pointing him to Luke 17 where Jesus spoke of Noah existing as a person and an actual flood destroying a sinful human race. I recommended purchase of “The Genesis Flood” by John C. Whitcomb and Henry M. Morris. The book explains the biblical record and its scientific Implications.
The eight inside the ark escaped God’s judgment. We escape judgment if Jesus becomes our ark. The door also speaks of the side of Jesus opened up by a Roman spear as He shed His blood as a sacrifice for our sin.
Sceptics could also visit Williamstown, Kentucky, where there is a replica of the full-size Noah’s Ark in a Christian theme park. Guides and notice board explanations would dispel lack of knowledge about the ark.
I complained to the newspaper after I was not allowed to reply in the letters columns to obvious mistakes of a sceptic. The outcome was permission to write this article for the newspaper’s God slot.
As a teenager, I did not believe all of the Bible. Even a Billy Graham Crusade counsellor could not convince me that Noah’s Ark was the truth.
Later, as I was getting nowhere in the faith, I vowed: “Lord, I am going to put my whole trust in Your Word. If I come across a passage I do not understand I will put it on the shelf and move on to what I can believe.”
Soon after, I heard John West, designer of the famous ocean liner Canberra, say Noah’s Ark was a seaworthy craft that could cope with a 90 per cent listing.
My interest in apologetics -- reasoned arguments justifying Christianity -- was kindled and saw me buy a continuing stream of books about the faith on a wide variety of subjects.
Dr. Monty White, then of Cardiff University, Wales, and later chief executive of UK Answers in Genesis, was a regular speaker at the Potteries area church I attended. This former atheist, dramatically healed after prayer, explained how the Bible supported scientific discovery.
He says: “As a result of discussions with Christians during my first year at university, I came to the conclusion that there was a God, that the Bible could be trusted as both a history book and a book of prophecy, and also that Christianity was a miraculous life-transforming religion.”
The Old Testament and the four Gospels look towards Calvary and the rest of the Scriptures look back to Calvary, where Jesus was crucified. To understand the New Testament, you must digest the Old Testament. Portends of Jesus run through the Hebrew writings.
This can be seen in the account of Noah’s Flood. Besides the world-wide catastrophe there are glimpses of the future Messiah.
Evidence of this flood is widespread in global folklore, including tablets found in Iraq detailing an antediluvian race.
Sceptics should ponder how landlubber Noah could build a large vessel with proportions that modern ships now follow.
The Earth’s topography and climate were different in Noah’s day. Rain had not yet fallen. A global water vapor canopy stopped the harmful Sun’s rays reducing human life expectancy. There were also a single landmass and a uniform global temperature. Science confirms these facts.
Noah was a “preacher of righteousness,” warning for 120 years of God’s coming judgment on mankind’s gross sins. God never acts without warning. But there were no converts for Noah. Violence, immorality, and occultism reigned.
Jesus forecast that His Second Coming would follow morality similarities to Noah’s day when same sex marriages were common.
God told Noah He was going to destroy all but his family because mankind had become increasingly evil.
The book of Genesis says Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. It is the first time grace is mentioned in the Bible. It means unmerited favor. Noah was “perfect in his generations,” a man “who did all that God commanded.”
Animals lived around Noah. God drew them, probably in a young state, to the ark He had instructed Noah to build. The menagerie was probably put into hibernation by God after the rain started.
When Noah emerged from the ark after a year the Earth had changed. Its axis had shifted, and mountain ranges had sprung up. No water vapor canopy meant an end to a uniform climate and the blocking of the Sun’s harmful rays.
Note there was only one door to the ark. This foreshadowed Christ, who said in John 10:7, “I am the door.” The Bible states He is the only Savior from sin. He is the way, the truth and the life and the only entrance route to Heaven. There is no other name by which man can be saved from the consequences of Divine after-life judgment.
Noah’s Ark is a picture of Jesus. Those on board escaped God’s judgment. We escape judgment if we call on Jesus to be our ark. The door reminds us of the side of Jesus opened up by a Roman spear as He shed His blood as a sacrifice for our sin.
Jesus is our Passover lamb. The angel of death did not touch the Israelites who had daubed lambs’ blood on their home entrances. We escape judgment if we accept Jesus’s death on the cross as our atonement for sin.
God instructed Noah to paint the inside and outside the ark with pitch, some form of waterproof resin. The Hebrew word for pitch is “kopher,” meaning covering or atonement. The question the Bible asks is: are you in the ark?
When I visited Arizona’s Grand Canyon our tour guide maintained its massive contours had been carved out during Noah's Flood.
This is the view of John C Whitcomb and Henry M Morris, authors of The Genesis Flood: The Biblical Record and its Scientific Implications, a seminal book that has shaken academia and birthed the modern creation science movement.
John MacArthur, the famous Californian television preacher and author, says of its 50th anniversary edition: “The Genesis Flood is as timely, thought-provoking, and helpful as ever. A tour de force and a must-read resource for pastors, teachers, scientists, and anyone who is troubled by the conflict between the biblical account of creation and the ever-changing claims of modern evolutionary theory.”
He adds: “It is one of the most important books of the past century. Prior to its publication in 1961, Evangelicals were for the most part unprepared to answer evolutionists’ and modern geologists’ claims about the antiquity of the Earth. Many blithely assumed that the days of creation in Genesis 1 represented long ages; others held to the “gap theory” -- the idea that vast eons elapsed between the initial creation of the heavens and earth (Genesis 1:1) and the formation of life as we know it (starting in Genesis 1:2).
“The Genesis Flood showed why such theories don’t do justice to the inspiration and authority of Scripture. The book revived evangelicals’ interest in flood geology, demonstrating that most of the geological phenomena usually cited as “proof” of the Earth’s antiquity are better explained as evidence of a catastrophic universal flood, as described in Genesis 6–8.
“In recent years young-earth creationism has come under heavy attack in Evangelical circles again, and The Genesis Flood is as timely, thought-provoking, and helpful as ever.”
The scientific and theological expertise of Drs. Morris and Whitcomb shows how the biblical account of Noah’s Flood aligns with Earth’s history and geology.
Ken Ham, President of Answers in Genesis, founder of Kentucky’s Creation Museum, was inspired by an early edition of the book.
He says: “I have been privileged to have witnessed the rising biblical creation movement for the past 40 years and have seen it blossom into a major international force. The movement not only has shaken the evolutionary, ‘millions of years’ establishment, but more importantly has equipped the church to share our Christian faith with renewed boldness.
“This classic work is also now recognized as a monumental milestone in the fight against compromise in the church and for biblical inerrancy in general during our sceptical modern era.”
Geologist Dr. Andrew Snelling recalled reading The Genesis Flood as a teenager: “Not only did this book convince me that God’s Word provides the only reliable basis for understanding geology, but it was foundational in igniting my passion for and calling into full-time creation ministry to uphold the truth of God’s Word and defend it from compromise, beginning at the very first verse. This book remains a classic work that is a must-read for those who would be informed and equip themselves both to stand on the authority of God’s Word in every area of life and knowledge and to defend their Christian faith.”

About the writer: Retired journalist Christopher Proudlove spent 46 years in various roles with national, regional, and local weekly newspapers in the United Kingdom. He also spent three years editing the Elim Pentecostal Church’s Evangel weekly magazine from 1979 – 1982. Christopher also produced outreach newspapers without charge for UK churches. In recent years he has written blogs for Christians for Zion and become an Israel advocate. He took on the BBC for inaccurate reporting on the 1967 Six Day War. BBC underlings twice rejected his protests, but his final stage plea to the BBC Trust was accepted. The program makers were forced to apologize for misreporting. He keeps an eye on two local weekly newspapers and the regional daily where he was responsible for launching a church news page. Christopher’s defenses of the Bible and Israel are now regularly found in the letters columns. He has exposed as lies various pronouncements from the local Palestine Solidarity Campaign group.
